Statewide Policy Advisory Board
While the project currently focuses on mathematics, the Statewide
Policy Advisory Board considers a broader scope that covers both
science and mathematics. The Board membership includes university
administrators and faculty, teachers, principals, superintendents,
elected officials from the NC General Assembly, directors of
foundations and CEOs from business and industry. An offshoot of the
Board is the IHE/K-12 Connections Task Force, a group of deans and
department heads that focuses on ways university divisions of Arts and
Sciences can become more involved in K-12 schools.
The Board last met February 6, 2007, in the UNC Board of Governor’s
Conference Room in Chapel Hill with Dr. June St. Clair Atkinson and Dr.
Alan Mabe serving as co-chairs. Dr. Atkinson is NC State Superintendent
of Public Instruction and Dr. Mabe is Vice-President of Academic
Planning and University-School Programs for UNC-General Administration.
Twenty-two Board members and 26 invited guests participated in the
annual meeting of thegroup. Those in attendance represented businesses,
foundations, the NC General Assembly, universities, communitycolleges
and schools. Others in attendance included the project Evaluation and
Management Teams, NC-PIMS Facilitators, two principals from Cumberland
County Schools, staff from the NC Department of Public Instruction, and
Ms. Sarah M. Smith, Director of Sponsored Programs at UNC-General
Administration.
